On 12/21/15, the President signed into law the reauthorized education legislation, formerly called the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), and most recently called No Child Left Behind (NCLB). The current education law is entitled the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). A brief overview of how the law affects families can be found here.
The US Department of Education provides the opportunity for the field to respond to the law and provide feedback and recommendations. These opportunities for comments include two regional events in Washington DC (held on 1/11/16) and in Los Angeles, California on 1/19/16. Additionally, there is an opportunity to submit comments electronically.
NAFSCE attended and presented our recommendations at the Washington DC Regional Conference earlier this week. You can review NAFSCE’s comments here.
We encourage you to submit your own comments. Feel free to utilize NAFSCE’s. What is most important is that our field responds to ensure that family engagement receives the priority we all feel it so strongly deserves. A link to the Department’s Request for Information (RFI) is here. The deadline is within one week, so we urge you to act quickly.
